Swaledale

Swaledale is renowned for its stunning scenery, spectacular even by Dales standards. It’s pretty villages, friendly and inviting pubs, ancient drystone barns, miles of amazing stone walls and lots of cycling and walking routes to suit all abilities. Above all Swaledale is also famous for its breed of hardy sheep (the Swaledale ram is the logo of the Yorkshire Dales National Park) as well as its delicious locally-made cheeses.

The River Swale flows through hay meadows bright with wild flowers in the summer surrounded by miles of drystone walls and dotted with carefully preserved stone field barns. This pattern of field walls, barns and meadows is a special feature of Swaledale.

The Owners

Jayne and Ivan are the proud owners of Throstle Nest House, a charming countryside holiday cottage, nestled in the picturesque village of Low Row in Swaledale, in the Yorkshire Dales. The owners embody a delightful fusion of Yorkshire warmth and Swiss vitality. Jayne, hailing from the heart of Yorkshire, brings her love for local hospitality and a genuine passion for the outdoors. Ivan, a native of Switzerland, adds a touch of Alpine flair and a shared enthusiasm for nature and adventure.

Eager to share their passion for rural living and an outdoor lifestyle, Jayne and Ivan open the doors of Throstle Nest House. They welcome guests to experience the serenity and wonder of the great English countryside. The scenery across Swaledale is unspoilt and wild providing walkers, hikers, cyclists and nature lovers with the perfect escape. An avid hiker, Ivan summited Kilimanjaro in 2023. Growing up in Yorkshire, Jayne adores exploring walks all over the moors and the dales, particularly happy wandering along the miles of dry stone walls, through the meadows and beside the stone field barns, dotted across the Swaledale landscape. They have plenty of recommendations to share.

This beautiful holiday home is not just a place to stay but a gateway to a peaceful retreat. The surrounding villages are brimming with quaint cafes, traditional pubs and crafts shops, and of course flocks of Swaledale sheep, the official symbol of the Yorkshire Dales. Tucked away in a cosy corner of Yorkshire, sitting in one of the most northerly of the dales, you’ll experience a deep sense of community, charm and beauty, leaving you feeling restored, relaxed and eager to return.
